Air quality monitoring station at Ohakea AF Base

Ohakea

20 JULY 2024 | INNOVATION

DST scientists were at Ohakea Air Force base to install the first ever air quality monitoring station. This prototype station directly measures trace gases NO2, CO2, and O3 along with particulate matter (also called particle pollution). Current emissions assessments are based solely on theoretical calculations and not on actual measurements from any of these key pollutants.

The introduction of this station and the subsequent creation of an NZDF air quality network will deliver true assessments of emissions to be found on all NZDF bases. This may be used to assess the associated health risks to NZDF staff and trace the trends required for fulfilling the New Zealand Government’s Emission Reduction Strategy.
