DST Director and Chief Scientist, Dr David Galligan, partipated at the ADSTAR Summit 2024 in Canberra Australia earlier this month. The Australian Defence Science, Technology and Research (ADSTAR) Summit brings the innovation, science and technology enterprise together to share ideas on a global scale.
ADSTAR was a fantastic event, with around 1700 participants. With foreign partners present, Prof Tanya Munro (AUS Chief Defence Scientist) launched their new Innovation, Science & Technology Strategy, which focuses on accelerating asymmetric advantage. She was joined by the AUS Deputy PM, AUS Secretary of Defence, and Heads of Service.
On Day 2 of the Summit, Dr Galligan sat on a panel alongside Dr Nick Joad, Chief Scientific Adviser, Ministry of Defence, United Kingdom, and Dr Peng Yam Tan, Chief Defence Scientist, Ministry of Defence, Singapore where they discussed the challenges and barriers to international collaboration in defence and technology development. This discussion emphasised how smaller countries can leverage their strengths, such as agility and openness, to facilitate collaboration. Additionally, ensuring technology security and diversifying supply chains are important considerations.
DST Science Excellence and Partnering Division Chief, Matt Hopkins was also in attendance and was an invited panel member at the Defence Investor breakfast - a deep dive into the crucial components of defence capability investments.
